Functional Training - what does that actually mean?

02 Jun. 2017

We used to run in order to survive, we climbed to find food and walking was our natural way of covering a distance. And today? We sit in order work, sit to get from point A to point B and sit in the evening to relax from sitting the whole day...

During the past years we repeatedly spoke about functional training and how to integrate functional Beach workout sessions into our Windsurf and Kiteboarding Clinics.

Today, more and more of our guest seem to be very interested and motivated to not only learn more about the functionality of movements but also implement functional elements into their workout routine.

For this reason, starting with a kick off Event in September 2017 on Mallorca,  Functional Training will become an own department at Watersports Training.  Until that time, we would like to give all of you, who are not sure what Functional Training really is, a few more information to help you understand what it´s all about.

Use it or loose it…

In order to understand the Background of Functional Training and natural movement patterns, it helps to look back in time a little. The human anatomy developed in close relation to functionality and our natural skill to adapt to our environment. During our evolutionary process, we developed skills and competencies, which helped us to survive. Basic instincts such as hunger, procreation or fear, were the motor for developing those skills. As hunters and collectors we needed to be able to run, jump, throw, climb, crawl or carry stuff and the more we trained and used those skills, the better we became in mastering them.

The first functional training routines were born! Now the problem with adaption is, that it works in both ways. Nowadays, more and more people begin loosing their natural abilities such as running, jumping or throwing, simply because they don´t play an important role in their daily life. Researches show that quite a high percentage of adults today lost their natural ability to even stand, walk or run anatomically correctly.  Today it almost seems natural that people complain about back pain while standing or pain in the knees after a little run…

We used to run in order to survive, we climbed to find food and walking was our natural way of covering a distance. And today? We sit in order to work, we sit while moving from point A to point B and we sit after work to relax from our stressful day. Many of our so called modern lifestyle diseases are caused by this that change.

Functional Training today does of course not mean that we have to go back to live in the woods, throw some stones or crawl into a cave. It rather suggests to look at and understand the complexity of our natural movement patterns and train in accordance to them and not as often seen in contradiction to them.

The famous Neurologist John Hughlings Jackson said once,

“the brain does not know muscles it only knows movement”

Functional Training is a holistic, movement based approach to first help you to move naturally again, second to become stronger, faster - physically more competent  and third provides an active injury protection for all joints, muscles and ligaments in your body.
